Pachyderms not ponies...

Beautiful Bali, Island of the Gods.

On route through Asia for magazine assignments, I hit Bali the tiny Indonesian island known for the colorful Hindu rituals, lush rainforest, spiritual vibe and of course location for EAT PRAY LOVE memoir lovers. Yes, the scenery and culture is stunning, a world unto its own, and the artisans routinely create exquisite offerings. But even over the Spa treatments, private plunge pools and exotic Mangosteen *my new favorite fruit, the Pachyderms (or Elephants) at the Safari Park delighted me most. They are so tuned to humans and so smart and their positive energy radiates out.

Riding them, well, not as much fun as feeding, playing or petting them from the ground. Not being able to sit in the correct position like the trainers, or 'Mahut', as a tourist you are in a teak carriage seat on their backs and prone to the swaying and sliding that their gait feels like. But its an extraordinary height to see the world from. And its impressive that the elephants give their Mahut's a leg-up by lifting their feet as a step-up. They are such spiritually tuned animals -- imagine your horse or pony on his best behavior day, smiling and willing and wearing a warm and fuzzy attitude a giving you a gentle nuzzle to the body. That's what elephants are like up close and personal all the time.

Straight From The Horses Mouth

Oh my.

No one likes a visit to the dentist -- but most of us monogastrics need to visit him sometime.

Jessie's appointment with the vet to float her teeth (or file them, to correct her bite) was on Tuesday. With a little help from some light sedation, she behaved, as the vet remarked 'like a little cupcake'. Very well behaved in other words. But she really didn't enjoy it - poor girl!

After a huge late snowstorm it was a wet and mucky day and so it was a cozy hour or two spent in the barn. Luckily, "Trouble", Jessie's boyfriend was on hand for moral support and stood quietly and patiently in the same stall as her for comfort while she had her treatment. Here, the mechanics of horse dentistry! Go Dr Canning!

More Horsepower at Fashion Week

As someone who appreciates sponsors for business and work and the possibilities that they create for people like me, I have to say that Mercedes Benz, the title sponsor for Fashion Week, really brought out the stops in the tented foyer this year. Their 'more horsepower' designed lounge area really was stunningly put together, and as a Sex in the Country girl, it resonated with me, making me feel very much at home even though my mare Jessie was thousands of miles away in Colorado. So here, a tribute to their great promotion, me with with new pal TV Producer Jeanne Kelly.

Fall Fashion round up!

There's nothing like a nice piece of eye candy to warm up on a winter's day -- and there was LOTS at the menswear Nautica presentation to preview Fall Winter 2011 at New York Fashion Week. Fresh whites, khakis. ice blue and smoldering looks ! were on show. Mmmmm...

New York Fall Fashions 2011

What a wild scene at the Heart Truth fashion show to kick off New York Fashion Week. I was lucky enough to get backstage and see the beauty transformations in process as celebrities got prepped for the big event promoting women's heart health and modeled red dresses from some of the city's best designers. My faves? Guiliana Rancic, who skipped and danced and Dita Von Teese who smouldered down the runway. Meeting make up pro Bobby Brown who quipped "my goal is to make each individual woman look their most beautiful" when asked how to make the looks cohesive on so many different types and ages was fun. And the live performance from Natasha Beddingfield capped the night off beautifully.

World Snow Polo 2010

World Snow Polo came upon us like a tidal wave here in Aspen! It was HUGE! With BELUGA vodka sponsoring the entire party time, and the Moscow Polo Club out in full force, the games began -- and were hard fought and won. Jessie came to the party as the Ref horse, which was great as she worked hard but not THAT hard and there are cute photos of her, of course (natch) all over. It was a whirlwind weekend of fun and stress, but the event went off without a hitch, without unbearable weather and without injury to man or horse. Whew! Here are some great snaps of the highlights on and off the field. From behind the scenes at Owl Creek (where the Stout String boarded while visiting Aspen) to action from the high goalers making their plays on the field. It was a very, very cool event.

Holiday Party Dressing.....

Getting ready for HOLIDAY! Look at these festive duds. The team that showed up to model great ROCKPORT shoes, JC PENNEY clothes and I SKI and BANANA REPUBLIC sunglasses, were a stellar group! A true New York posse: Tavish, Margeaux, Emily, Michael and Eve. The clothes ran from casual (Southpole 8180 Jeans and Snorkel jackets) to formal-fabulous (Mango dresses at JCP) and all suited the moods of the models wearing them.
In the many years of appearances on CW11 Morning News, we have never taken a photo on set or even behind the scenes (even though I think I have made more appearances here over the course of my career than anywhere else) so it was nice to grab a snap or two. Whoever said the economy was going gangbusters must have been watching the foot traffic on Fifth Ave (my personal barometer for New York Holiday Chaos Scale) as when the weather is good - as it was - New York always works up a frenzy early.
And it wasn't even Thanksgiving. But as exciting as the big city Christmas lights may be, there is nothing, I repeat nothing as beautiful as our snowy wintery wonderland back here in Colorado. Just don't tell anyone else about it, (except a few skiers -- we cant be that selfish!)
